In late August of 2008 Kasey Quinn arrived at Roger Williams University not knowing what to expect. She was not attending her first choice college, Quinnipiac University where she had been weight listed. Never the less Kasey was comforted knowing she was only forty-five minutes away from her family in Stoughton, MA.
Kasey recalls the, “sense of excitement and nervousness” that began to overtake her as she pulled into campus. She was finally going to be on her own attending a school that she knew she was going to greatly benefit from. However, she was not satisfied with how things were
going to start off.
Kasey had a strong desire to live in Willow her freshman year, but had been outraged and disappointed when she received an e-mail a few weeks before arriving at Roger Williams not only stating that she was going to be living in Cedar, but she would also be in a forced triple. Kasey’s fear was soon proven when she realized she did not get along with her third roommate, “I did not get along with my third roommate
at all, she was crazy. She was a hypochondriac and anytime my roommate or I would get sick she would go home until we “sterilized” the room. Also, she had an obsession with baskets. Every time she would go home she would bring back another basket, to the point that I could not get down from my top bunk without stepping on one of her baskets, “ she said. Kasey was ecstatic when her roommate moved in to
a single just two months in to the school year. “Those two months felt like the longest period of my life.”
In spite of this Kasey was relieved to acquire an amazing friendship with her other roommate, who surprisingly was a friend she made at orientation just two months prior to attending Roger Williams.
Throughout the course of first semester Kasey found herself adapting to her new surroundings without any problems, except the occasional feeling of being homesick. “I found it easy I think that the small class sizes and great group of people I lived around made it much easier. I was also really close with my RA and she helped a lot,” she said. Kasey was also relieved that she was able to juggle her school work and job in the athletic training room, which she has substituted
for the mail room this year.
When it came down to it Kasey loved those warm windless days at Roger Williams, “My favorite thing to do at RWU is when it’s warm to just walk down to the water with friends. It is so beautiful and the campus just has this feeling of happiness when the weather is nice.” Kasey did realize one thing about the student body that she did not care for at Roger Williams, the lack of excitement of going to sports games.
“I really do enjoy RWU I just never realized that it would bother me not having big sports teams so if I could change anything I wished we had a better athletic department or at least a football team.”
Overall Kasey greatly enjoyed her freshman year at Roger Williams. Although there were some hardships during her first few months at school she was able to overcome them with the guidance of her RA and new family from Cedar 4North.

All About Me
On July 8, 1990, I Fallon Katherine Keating was born at 1:15 a.m. missing my grandfather's birthday by one hour and fifteen minutes. My mother decided on the name Fallon from a hit soap opera "Dynasty" and Katherine after her grandmother. My parents had a challenge ahead of them, both being recent graduated seniors of high school and now having a newborn at age 18. However, my parents have been with one another since 8th grade and have proven to me that love at first sight is possible. My only other sibling Eddy was born July 16th, 1997 and is seven years younger than me. I have lived in North Haven, CT my entre life. Nothing ever happens in town except for the occasional person being pulled over for speeding.
Since I was six I have always loved butterflys. My cousins father passed away in a car accident when she was just five years old and her mother told us that he was now a butterfly in heaven. That story fascinated me and I have continued to always find butterflys as a symbol of beauty and peace. Also, Januarary of my sophmore year in high school my cousin who was also my godson passed away at 5 months due to CHD (congenital heart disease). When Liam passed away the quote "Live.Love.Laugh" became important to my family and I along with "It's not about about the number of years you've lived, it's about the number of lives you've touched during that time."
I absolutely love the summer and being by my pool with my family and best friends. The simplicity of a hotdog and hambuger along with potato salad makes me happy. Starbucks iced mocha's are my favorite drink and a bacon, egg and cheese is my favorite meal for breakfast. Listening to music while getting ready with my roomate is my highlight of the evening on the weekends. Reading relaxes me, as does baths, and riding in the car alone where I find I do most of my thinking. Hiking and fishing with my dad is one of my favorite pastimes where I can spend time alone with him and usually learn facts about the wildlife around me. Laying in bed watching movies with my mom is what comforts me the most, she is my world and more. My mother was diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) in March of 2009 and has caused me to become active in MS organizations.
If you ask any of my friends they would most likely tell you that I am in love with my dog. Niko is an overweight black lab that I have nick named "Shadow." When I am home from college Niko is constantly at my side whether I am outside, walking around the house, or at the kitchen table. All 110 pounds of him sleeps on my legs every night or he is right at my side snoring in my face.
Over the past five years I've discovered more and more that I am terrified of flying in airplanes. Also, heights and spiders are the other two fears that I have. Little dogs tend to annoy me even though I am one of the biggest animal lovers one could meet.
Overall, family is the most important thing to me in life. A strong family bond and having a support system is something I feel I have always benefited from. Having morals and a genuine personality is something that I hope to pass down to my children.

The Net-Newsers of Society
In today's society it is not all uncommon to see the person sitting next to you on their cell phone checking e-mail, reading sports scores on espn or googling for information. It has become clear over the last ten years and even more recently that just watching the news on t.v. is becoming quite outdated. There are numerous tech-savy consumers in the world that make it obvious that the simplicity of using the internet to get immediate information is most beneficial.
I identify myself as a "Net-Newsers" type of consumer. My daily routine consists of waking up and checking the weather for the day on weatherchannel.com right from my blackberry. I continuously receive e-mails from my college, Roger Williams University updating me on the latest information occurring on campus. Most recently I have found myself googling any information I need when a computer is not available at hand from my blackberry, whether it be a phone number on yellowpages.com or the directions to a local restaurant. At the end of the day is common to see me on my laptop reading the latest headlines on yahoo or watching E! to hear the latest gossip about Hollywood celebrities.
Everyone in society craves the instant gratification given from the accessibility of the internet. Numerous "Net-Newsers" are from the crowd of a younger generation. However, slowly over the past few years it has been noticed that some of the baby boomer generation has become extremely tech-savy to keep up with today's common norms of the media.

"Signs" not your common meaning
Many may believe that it is possible to express how one feels using words, (language). But the direct opposite has been discovered, due to the fact that when one says the word love, for example, to their friend they may interpret a boyfriend, hearts, and happiness, but deception, abuse, and lying may come to mind of the other person. After leaving a writing for mass media class on February 2, over twenty students discovered that using signs allows the same message to be conveyed to all.
A simple :) is easily recognized as a symbol for happiness and <3 is widely known as love to text and instant message feins.
When the Comm 111 class watched a video about a love story, where two people only used signs to express their feelings and thoughts, the main idea that symbols/signs are interpreted and viewed the same to others was supported. This video was fascinating as it showed the viewer that there is actually no need to have to speak one word to someone. Instead through drawings, symbols, expression on ones face and body language a message, thought or feeling can be shown to another human being.
As I left class on the morning of February 2, I found myself taking in someones smile, confused expression, and angered face more than usual. Although these students are not using words, it is easily recognized behind each and every expression on this campus there is a story that brought about such feelings upon their face.
